I started Have Knives, Will Cook in August of 2008, after taking a huge leap of faith and leaving a 10-year career in architecture to attend culinary school. I had just begun my first kitchen job, and was embarking on what seemed to me an exciting adventure which I wanted to document and share.
So initially I added the description “ true accounts of an architect turned restaurant cook” to the name. I hoped I could offer insight into the reality of such a mid-career leap, but in truth was also trying to mask the somewhat un-focused nature of the blog. All I knew was that I wanted to post stories about working in the kitchen, trying out recipes, cookbooks and tools, and eating out – all the things that one would expect from an aspiring chef, right?
After a little over a year, I’ve had some good response from other career-changers, but I’m also happy to have connected with so many great people in the blogging community who are also animal lovers, gardening enthusiasts, artists, etc.. as well as food lovers and fellow cooks.
So I thought it was high time to revamp. Old friends will notice the new layout, and that I’ve now removed any reference to my previous life as an architect. It feels like ages ago now, and no longer feels relevant to me or my blog.
All the old content is still here. Hopefully this next year will generate more stories from Home, Work, and Out and About, and give me a chance to collect more Recipes, Kitchen Tips, Cookbooks, and Tool info.
